Government
PrintOwn the Podium thanks its government partners for their contributions and commitment to helping Canadian athletes achieve their goals at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The support from the federal, provincial and territorial governments enables Own the Podium to support winter and summer targeted sports all the way to the Games.
The Government of Canada is the largest contributor to the Own the Podium initiative. Through Sport Canada, it contributes a total of $47 million in enhanced excellence funding each year to Canadian winter and summer sports. A total of $11 million of this enhanced funding is committed to winter sports, and $36 million for the summer sports.
In September 2009, the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport) announced that the Government of Canada would assist the national funding partners by assuming payment of $11 million in funding for the Own the Podium (OTP) 2010 initiative, in support of the nation’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
